Media on Monique

I am an Illinois native who has lived in Texas for nearly 15 years.  I am a wife, mom, and journalism student who enjoys writing poetry and spoken word pieces. I work part-time for a packing and shipping company, and I also help my husband with his mobile cooking and catering service.

My mission in blogging is to discuss topics that I have directly, or indirectly experienced in my past and present. However, I will discuss these topics not only from my own perspective, I will compare with similar issues, experiences and stories that are circulating in the current news and pop culture today.

Some of the topics that I personally relate to are: being raised within the pentecostal religion; teen pregnancy; abortion; domestic violence; single parenting; adoption; drug/alcohol abuse; marriage; being overweight; kidney disease; being a returning student and more.

Hiding Behind the Lens

My name is Marisa Trevino and I tend to be found behind the lens of a camera rather than in front. I’m hoping to talk about art, photography, and the collaboration of the two with music. I also hope to notify others of different art scenes and events coming up in Irving and Dallas. To start off this adventure, I’ll introduce two of my favorite things, art and music. Since watching this music video, I’ve become intensely interested in the collaboration of artists, such as animators, and musicians and I suspect art and the creative process in general. Below is a video of Iron and Wine’s song “Joy” accompanied by the music video created by multimedia artist Hayley Morris.

Keyla as in Kay

KeylaHi there! Keyla is my name but you’re probably pronouncing it wrong. It reads like ‘Kayla,’ a traditional white-girl name–which I’m NOT, but in my attempt to become the good naturalized American that I’ve become, you can call me Kay. Everyone does. My friends, co-workers, siblings, family, my three-year-old who I’ve actually trained to finally call me ‘mommy’ before calling me out by name, even my parents that say it with a lovely Mexican-Spanish accent. Of course, my professors know me by last name because to them I’m just another seed trying to bloom with the help of their irrigation.

So go ahead and call me Kay. I will be getting very personal with the randomness of my experiences past and present. And I do mean that to the very extent of the word. As a mom, college student, employee, daughter and friend there is nothing simple about the way my clock ticks.

On a fast ‘Pace’

According to sources, Larry Bird has recently stated that their offensive of scoring machine Paul George will be making his debut later this season, possibly around April once the playoffs come sneaking in. Not sure what to think about Larry Bird’s decision to bring George in the danger lane after a gruesome leg injury that ended his NBA season during the FIBA (Fédération Internationale de Basketball) league just last summer. Bird, who is a dedicated winner, a great time hall of fame and has three championships rings under his belt with the Boston Celtics. Might not be making his most pleasant decision as President of the Indiana Pacers by brining upon George to the bright lights in Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Paul George has been slowly picking up his pace to get his leg back in the perfect shape. It’s insane how rapidly his progress has endured during the last couple months. It will be best for George to wait just like Derrick Rose did; after he torn his ACL twice back to back years. Only Paul George will bring that decision to announce because it’s his body, not Birds. It’s always best to wait till one is one hundred percent on the court than to play below one hundred. Only time will speak.

Introduction to Jacky 1301

Jacky MHello! My name is Jacky, and this is a basic description of who I am. Don’t worry, there is no syllabus, and as far as buying books, I do not require you to purchase any. I am about to blow your mind with random facts about me: I am currently a student at North Lake community college, I have 9 siblings, I love food, I love chocolate, I’m a cheapaholic, I love Ellen Degeneres,  I’m Mexican-American, I love dogs, some call me creative (by some, I mean my mom), I consider myself to have a great sense of humor, I want to be a news anchor (the comedian gig didn’t work out), and I enjoy long walks on the beach. Why does this sound like I’m uploading this to a dating site? Oops. Test in a week, good luck!

PS: I promise I am not a narcissist

Love, Jacky

Classes start next week but I wanted to share this website with you. Our students will be improving their social media skills and blogging on this site on a variety of topics. Each post will be edited before going live but the content, tone and words will be student driven. There is still time to register for one of our Flex Term Classes. For more information about our program visit our journalism homepage at See you next week!
